A New Map to Help Predict Election Results
posted by Tom
Have you noticed how the media has upped the ante on using political
maps during this year's primaries? Seriously, every time I turned on
CNN it felt like a scene out of "Enemy of the State", only instead of
tracking Gene Hackman jumping between moving trains, they were honing
in on an unsuspecting voter on Main Street. And while the primary
season is behind us, the Electoral College maps are just heating up.
Interactive maps, maps by state, county, city and even block. I
particularly like the "cartogram" Electoral map - it looks like a
someone got locked in the Pez factory, got bored, and decided to try to
make a map of the U.S. out of candy.
Electoral College or Pez Candy?

Seeing that I'm a snack kind-of-guy, I'd like to suggest we build on this Pez idea. How about a Political Snack Map? Instead of red and blue states, we have pretzel, pork rind and popcorn states. Then when the pundits start assessing how each state will vote come November, they can reference our snack map for further analysis. So I'm taking nominees starting now for each state. Once I have all 50, I'll publish the map here and alert the folks at Fox, CNN, all of the other networks, newspapers, etc that the map is available for their use...as long as they reference the source ("As you can see here on the Snack Map provided by votethelesserevil.com, Wisconsin and Minnesota may be close in geography, however voters there are light years apart on issues like crunchability, salty vs sweet and the role of dips.")
Seriously, post your state's snack nominee.

it's like an etcha sketch. remember those from way back when? i'm going to see if i can etcha sketch the map myself and send to you. gotta post it!
I'm nominating the classic knish for NY -- the round ones, not those pillow-shaped crappy ones. Like from that old-school place in nyc on houston (a few blocks east of 2nd ave). yum.
What colors are pretzels, pork rinds (ew!), and popcorn going to be?
I don't know if I can handle more than 2 colors...
I recommend Pretzels for Nevada, we love to snack in Sin City.
thanks maria and stefanie -- so we have NY and NV covered. let's hear from all you other state snackers out there.
Gene Hackman is the man.
"I would hope you would support who we are, not who we are not. These six individuals have made the choice to work, the choice to sacrifice 23 nights in the next four months to represent you, this high school. That kind of commitment and effort deserves and demands your respect. This is your team." -- Norman Dale

My home state, Rhode Island, had four – yes, FOUR – unique snacks that will make your taste buds tingle. Here’s a countdown.
4) Coffee milk: It was to my surprise and horror that this delicious drink had never made its way out of my fair state. Friends at college in Illinois had never heard of it, but bringing a bottle or coffee syrup back with me after winter break one year quickly convinced them. You take some of the syrup – Autocrat is the only manufacturer left after Eclipse went out of business – and mix it with a glass of milk just as you would chocolate syrup. Coffee syrup is thinner and lighter than its chocolate counterpart. The parochialism of Rhode Islanders has prevented this drink from traveling very far, but it’s a shame for this refreshing drink option. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_milk
3) Stuffies: This is the nickname for stuffed quahogs, very large clams found in Southern New England, an animal since made famous as the hometown of the Griffins on Family Guy. Stuffies take the quahog and mix it with your choice of peppers, chorizo, tobasco, onions and bread crumbs. Stuff it back in the quahog and bake it. It’s a summer classic in seafood-loving Rhode Island and one that can be a meal all in itself. http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=237
2) Hot wieners: These are small sausages that you usually eat three and four at a time. You cover them with meat sauce, onions, celery salt, etc. Often these toppings are added while the maker has a string of them along his arm – no joke (see link). Wein-o-rama in my hometown of Cranston is the greatest producer of hot wieners, which are a must-have snack whenever an ex-pat returns home. They may have an acquired taste to some, but there is nothing quite as Rhode Island as these. http://www.boston.com/travel/explorene/rhodeisland/articles/2006/08/06/dont_call_it_a_hot_dog/
1) Del’s Lemonade: “Stop at the Sign of the Lemon” is the slogan for the frozen drink company, and I say, “Yes, please” whenever that slogan beckons me. Del’s “world” headquarters are just a quarter-mile from the house where I grew up. Made with fresh lemons and sugar, this drink makes the Slushee seem like a syrupy rip-off compared to the light, true taste of this lemonade. Del’s offers other flavors besides the lemonade, but those are only for kids or people who don’t know any better. Nothing is preferable after a Little League game or day at the beach. http://www.dels.com/
Brendelicious - an impressive list of RI snack nominees. i'd have to lean towards the "hot wieners" based on the name itself and that these little dogs seem very, very snackable.
